The earth is covered in plastic. About 60% of the more than 8,700 tons of plastic that is made up of plastics are no longer viable but are mainly based on landfill or release to the environment. That equates to more than 400 kg of plastic waste for every 7.6 billion people in the world.

The reason for this is that many plastics are not recycled in our current system. And even the recycled ones still go to the final landfill.

Plastic cannot be recycled, at least not using traditional techniques. Most are only offered a new lease on life before the last on land, sea, or incinerator. But there is hope for a different type of recycling called chemical recycling.

Traditional physical or mechanical recycling generally breaks the plastic down into small pieces that are mixed together and then formed together to create low-quality plastic products. Chemical recycling, on the other hand, breaks down the plastic at the molecular level, making "platform molecules" available for use for other purposes. It is early for this idea, but in a sense it can open up a wide range of possibilities.

Plastics are widely separated by materials known as polymers, which are made of small "monomers" of structural molecules that are highly synthesized from carbon and hydrogen. The challenge in recycling chemical plastics is finding the right ways to break down and recycle materials into various end products and minimize waste.

All of this must be done productively, economically, quantitatively, and neutrally. The solution should ultimately do less harm than the problem you are trying to solve.

Plastic-forming monomers can take different shapes and sizes: some are straight lines, some have branches, and some have rings. The combined methods determine the plastic material, including how easily they break, melting temperatures, and more.

In very simple terms, breaking chemical bonds is a matter of absolute power. Plastics are very strong materials and often require a lot of energy to break them, usually in the form of heat to perform a process called pyrolysis. You can have direct crack control using the right catalyst, a substance that evokes a chemical reaction from somewhere in the polymer chain.

An example of a guide is the type of natural molecules called enzymes. This occurs in living organisms and plays an important role in bodily processes, such as digestion. There are 50 little things known as plastic material that can digest plastic because they contain enzymes that help break it down.

But using these natural processes can be challenging because organisms have to be kept alive, so they require very specific conditions like temperature and pH levels and often take a long time to complete the process. However, with more research, they may be used commercially in the future. Some catalysts can work very quickly. So we can use this to create new electronic devices like data cables to transmit data to a speaker system to play music.

New techniques

There is a worldwide effort in this growing field to develop new strategies. Studies have shown that you can recycle old kitchen chemicals (natural polymer) into a biodegradable resin for use in 3-D printers. Other contaminants such as food, rubber, and plastic can be used to quickly produce graphene (a single form of carbon atom). Scientists have also used bioplastics to slowly replace biodegradation and remove carbon dioxide.

Chemical recycling may recommend recycling. This is trapped in the router due to its small size and strength, causing the entire system to stick, slow down, or even dry completely and need cleaning. Grinders cannot function on thin films, much less on microplastic applications 100 times.

Most of these methods have been demonstrated in the laboratory and there are several companies that now do it commercially. These processes require time, technology, and money. But until we stop using plastic, this is an opportunity for investors to develop a circular carbon economy through the use of chemicals for plastic recycling.
